The Top 5 Virginia Vacation Spots

Apr-23-2009 By skitaddle

Are you visiting Virginia? Read this list of top vacation spots in the state of Virginia!

Jamestown
You might as well start at the beginning if you’re going to visit Virginia. In 1607 the first English settlement in the entire nation was right here in Jamestown. Visit the popular Jamestown Settlement, a ‘living history’ museum where visitors can tour replicas of the ships the settlers used to sailed the Atlantic, and also discover the fascinating life-size re-creations of Indian villages and Colonial forts.

Richmond
Rich with Civil War history, the capital city of Virginia is a frequent travel destination for history buffs as well as vacationers. Start at the Virginia Historical Society to learn about the state’s interesting past, and you can even research your family tree at the library while you’re there. Other spots of interest in Richmond are the Richmond Canal Walk, the National Battlefield Park and the Civil War Visitor Center.

Appomattox
The Civil War practically comes to life at the Appomattox Court House National Park where General Lee surrendered to General Grant in 1865, ending the war. The Appomattox County Historical Museum is another must-see for lovers of history as it houses several artifacts and glimpses of the past such as a one-room schoolhouse. Appomattox also has plenty of fun and outdoor recreational activities at one of its two state parks, Holliday Lake and James River State Parks where guests can camp, swim, canoe, fish, hunt and go horseback riding.

Shenandoah National Park
Deemed as one of the most beautiful spots in the whole world, Shenandoah National Park features over 500 miles of trails with 100 of them being a part of the well-known Appalachian Trail. Don’t miss Skyline Drive as it offers breathtaking scenery as it spans the entire length of the park along the crest of the magnificent Blue Ridge Mountains.

There’s really something for just about everyone here, from fishing and tubing along the Shenandoah River to hiking, biking and even horseback riding. Spend the night camping under a blanket of stars or in one of the great lodges in the area. And another must-see not far from the park are Luray Caverns, which are the largest, and probably the most popular caverns in the eastern United States.

Virginia Beach
Perhaps the most popular destinations in all of Virginia are its magnificent beaches. Most visitors are drawn to the three mile boardwalk that features numerous hotels, restaurants and plenty of nightlife. Nearly every weekend from May through September there are free music concerts and festivals in addition to all of the fun to be had along the beach.

The eastern shore of Virginia boasts both bayside and oceanfront beaches and accommodates just about any type of vacationer. The eastern shore is connected to the mainland by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel which is nearly 18 miles long. Just north-west of there is Kiptopeke State Park, where one can fish 24 hours a day, explore the hiking trails and then in October, attend the famous Eastern Shore Birding Festival that draws bird watchers from all over the world.

Other great destinations along Virginia’s beaches include the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, which offers fascinating discoveries for all ages, First Landing State Park which has over 200 campsites complete with biking trails and boat ramps, and of course the historic Cape Henry Lighthouse. This lighthouse has the distinction of being the oldest one built by the US government, and Cape Henry is also known for being the spot where the English settlers first came ashore back in 1607!

When planning a family vacation getaway, the choices can be overwhelming. What should you do? Where should you go? To make life easier, these questions should be answered before you start planning. Let’s take a few minutes and help you answer these questions before you get started with the planning.

What Should You Do?
How does skiing fresh powder of Vail’s Blue Sky Basin, or relaxing in the white sand of Hawaii’s beaches and hitting a hole in one at one of Myrtle Beach’s many golf courses sound to you? Ski, beach and golf vacations are great choices for families.

Skiing Vacations
Many resorts offer a plethora of activities for you and your family. While you are skiing fresh powder, your children can be supervised by a certified ski instructor while enrolled in ski school. After that lesson, you can meet up with them and they will be happy to show you what they learned. When the day ends, be sure to explore the town. Ski towns are notorious for some of the best shopping and fine dining. If you want to take a day off from skiing to catch your breath, try ice skating, toboggan runs or just sit by a fire with a good book. When it comes time to plan a ski vacation, try to plan at least 5 to 6 months ahead of time. This is when you can find the best deals and you shouldn’t have to worry about the hotel you want to stay in, completely booked. I have found that a little research goes a long way. After you choose your hotel, see if they have any packages or specials available. Most of the time hotels and resorts will offer a bit of a discount on lift tickets and other activities. If a special or package is not available, make sure to buy your lift tickets in bulk to save some money. Try to buy a 3 or 4 day pass versus buying individual tickets each day. Often times, these lift tickets will be good for more than 1 resort in the area.

Ski Vacation Destinations.
The Rocky Mountains of Colorado offer many good resorts to choose from. Some favorites include Telluride, Vail and Breckenridge. Telluride Ski Resort was built in the 1970’s and along with it came cultural events, festivals, music and more. People come to this town year after year for the wonderful skiing and other fun activities.
If skiing is what you are all about, Vail is the place to go! It has just been named number 1 for the 14th time in 19 years in Ski Magazines “Top 50 Resort Guide”. Vail offers world class skiing, fabulous nightlife and many fine dining options.
Breckenridge is a 147 year old Victorian town. People flocked to this town in the 1800’s in search of riches in the form of gold. Now this town is a haven for skiers of all types. This town offers many activities for families and travelers.

Beach Vacations
Beach resorts can be perfect for your next family vacation getaway. Some of the best resorts are in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.

Mexico
Los Cabos is one of Mexico’s most popular vacation destinations. It is located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Los Cabos features luxury hotels, championship golf courses and some of the best sport fishing in the world. Other activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking and much more.

The Caribbean
The Cayman Islands offer many things for many people. 99% of the travelers visit Grand Cayman Island. It is easy to see why people go here. Of the islands this island offers the most when it comes to resorts and hotels. The fabulous snorkeling and scuba diving is not to be missed. When diving, you will think you are in a pet shop aquarium. The fish are abundant and the stingrays are gentle and fun to watch. If time permits, rent a Jeep and cruise around the Island.

Hawaii
Hawaii offers many choices for the traveling family. Each island is unique and offers something for everyone. Kauai is less touristy but still offers much to do. The surfing and snorkeling are not to be missed. Be sure to take a day and drive up to Waimea Canyon. This canyon offers many photo opportunities, and spots to get out and hike near beautiful waterfalls. Maui offers white sand beaches perfect for sunbathing and relaxing. Maui also offers great sightseeing and wonderful shopping. Of the islands, Hawaii, also known as “The Big Island” is the largest. Here you can visit the only active volcanoes of the Hawaiian Islands. You will also find wonderful resorts, pristine beaches, great nightlife, fine dining and shopping.

Golf Vacations
Right about now, you may be thinking “How can a golf vacation be good for my whole family?” Well, many golf resorts offer more than just golf. While you are out hitting the lynx, your family can be enjoying a beach, pool, or shopping. When you are done on the course you can meet up and head to one of the many fine dining establishments near your resort. Many golf vacations can be combined with a beach getaway. Mexico, Hawaii and the United States offer some of the best golf near some of the best beaches. These resorts offer many different specials and packages that can be tailored to fit your specific wishes.

Whatever your next vacation entails for you, you will not be disappointed with any one of the recommendations above. Be sure to see all you can see. The bottom line is to enjoy yourself and relax!

Family get together is one exclusive event that excites everybody. Each members of the family are not always given that opportune time to have a grand time with his or her clan. There are those who will take one whole week break to make up for the times they missed with spouse, siblings, parents or children.

There are means to have a fruitful and meaningful time with your loved ones and the most common one is by having a vacation spent with them. Vacations can be spent at home, at of town or out of the country. It depends on the preferences of the family having a vacation. It can be stress relieving to have a grand vacation once in a while whether a week or 3-day long vacation to beautiful spots and tourists attraction all over the world.

Here are ten simple steps to get you going in a dream vacation that can be the best:

1. First things first! Meet with the members of your family and discuss where they want to go, how they want to spend it and how long? Compromise if you will head for the beach, cruise, and other countries or if you’ll just stay home and have some barbeque and tea. Children should also be consulted because they can cause a lot of delays and you don’t want to have to deal with their tantrums when all you want is a cool vacation.

2. Upon listing possible locations of your choices, it’s time to check your budget and time. Schedule is a very vital factor for a successful vacation. Budget of course is top of the list priority to consult.

3. After choosing your location, decide on what travel options will you use. Will you driving your own car, will you travel via train, plane, or bus? Get the beast deal of travel expenses and look for discounts. There are those agencies who offer discounts for group packages.

4. Before packing your things, check on the weather of the place you plan to visit. Safe and sound travel should be a priority in your vacation to avoid unexpected occurrences.

5. Pack your things! Have a checklist for the things you will need and ensure that all things in your list are in the bag. Have extra clothing for your children; they are always prone to dirt so there’s no harm in packing more clothes than usual. Zipped the essentials like money, travel tickets, mobile phones, etc in a separate bag. Bring cookies or chips and water or other liquid drinks for you and your children. It’s better to be sure that you and your family members will not get hungry on the road.

6. Before living, advice your neighbor or other relatives about your where around during the planned trip. Be sure that all house equipments are turned off and have the doors locked. Switch on the answering machine to keep track of incoming calls.

7. Upon arrival on the destination, subdue yourself on the sceneries, the culture and the environment of the chosen place. You’re hitting two birds in one stone as to speak; as you are enjoying and learning at the same time. Let other family members enjoy themselves and do not force them to go on a place when they don’t intend to be there. It will be advisable to have an itinerary that you can follow once your mind lacks on activities to do for the day.

8. Try on exotic foods that will entice your appetite, of course these do not go for everybody. Eat a different cuisine that will make the trip memorable and remarkable.

9. Buy out souvenirs or other items that you can keep as a remembrance of your trip.

10. Sleep early before the scheduled trip back home. It will always be good to restore some more energy to consume on the day of your departure.

Having a vacation is one good way to have fun with the family. Planning ahead is the key to have a smooth and hassle free vacation that you will always remember. Planning for a good worthwhile vacation might be best when consulted with the members of the family. After all, it’s not only you who would take that vacation but all the members as well. With all comprises settled, vacations whether simple can be the best vacation for your family!

Your Guide To Planning A Family Vacation

Apr-23-2009 By skitaddle

Planning a family vacation can be difficult, but it’s a great way to get the family on the same page, looking forward to an enjoyable vacation together. Family vacations are a great time to bond with the family and forge memorable experiences. The key to a successful family vacation is in the planning. Here are some tips for planning your family vacation.

First, start planning your family vacation well in advance of the actual trip. This can be a fun and exciting process, as you talk about possible destinations, methods of travel, and activities once you get there. Visit travel agents together and gather information from agents and over the Internet. Planning in advance will give you a better opportunity to find good deals by booking ahead.

Second, keep cool. Planning a family vacation should be fun in and of itself, not to mention the fun you will have on your vacation. Don’t turn this into a family fight, or dark cloud will loom over the whole vacation planning process, and maybe the vacation itself. If your family is grumpy or uninterested save your planning for a time when everyone feels better.

Third, let everyone have some input. Even the youngest children should get to have a say in the planning process. Planning a family vacation should be something everyone can be involved in. Not only will that be more enjoyable for them, but they will be less apt to blame you if things go wrong on the vacation, since they had a hand in the planning process.

Fourth, choose a family-friendly location. As you are considering different vacation spots, keep in mind that different members of the family have different interests and needs. Try to find someplace that will have something for everyone, even if they are not 100% entertained around the clock.

If you have smaller children, there are great resorts that offer kids programs that will keep your children entertained for an hour or all day. Similarly, resorts that have activities geared towards older children or teenagers can be fun if your children fall into those age brackets. Does your family have a common interest? If you like hiking, skiing, or snorkeling, consider someplace where you can participate together in those activities.

Finally, ask your travel agent about package deals, promotions for traveling at certain times of the year, or discounts for families with children. Not all package deal discounts get published on the agent’s website, so it pays to ask in person. You can often find good deals if you are flexible about when and where you go, so be sure to keep an open mind.

Planning a family vacation is part of the enjoyment of the vacation itself. It builds excitement and anticipation, allowing you and your children to dream about the great time you’re going to have. Even more importantly, a well-planned vacation is going to go more smoothly and be more enjoyable than one that was largely unplanned. Keep in mind everyone’s expectations and the activities they enjoy, and you’ll be better able to find a vacation destination or package that makes everyone happy.

Family Vacation Travel -Kauai For Kids

Mar-16-2009 By skitaddle

When it comes to family vacation travel, there are few places on the planet which offer more for the entire family than the Hawaiian island of Kauai. There are plenty of activities available for the kids so that parents can get some much needed rest and relaxation. Kauai hotels and resorts feature plenty of things to keep the youngsters occupied, including supervised activities which allow their parents to do a little exploring on their own while being confident that their kids are enjoying their vacation too!

The Grand Hyatt Kaua’i Resort & Spa offers a full day of children’s activities for kids between 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, as well as evening sessions from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Your children will learn about Hawaiian arts and crafts and have the opportunity to do face painting, weave leis and palm fronds as well as make seashell bracelets. They’ll also enjoy scavenger hunts, meet parrots and feed beautiful Koi fish (they will eat right from your hand!). The nighttime sessions also include video games and computer time. Children from 3 to 12 will enjoy these activity sessions.

At the Kaua’i Marriott Resort & Beach Club, there is the Kalapaki Kids Club. Full-day (9-3) sessions are only available on Saturday and Sunday, with half day sessions of 9:00-11:30 am or 11:30 am – 3:00 pm being offered on weekdays. On Wednesdays, there are evening activities for children from 6:00 to 10:00 pm.  Your children will have lots of fun playing traditional Hawaiian games, going on treasure hunts, taking part in obstacle course races, trying out boogie boarding and much more . This is a family vacation travel option for kids from 5 to 12 years old. This resort also has its own mini zoo and a kids’ pool for your children’s entertainment.

There is also a program for children from 5 to 12 years of age at the Princeville Resort. The Keiki Aloha Program offers sessions from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Saturday which include Hawaiian dance lessons, arts and crafts and even gives your kids a chance to get in the water with snorkeling, swimming, canoeing and visiting tidal pools!

The Keiki Aloha Program is also available at the Sheraton Kaua’i, with half and full day sessions from Monday to Friday. There are activities suited to children from 3 to 12 years of age (children must be toilet trained, however). There are activities offered including ukulele and hula lessons, fishing using traditional bamboo poles, arts and crafts including lei weaving and beach activities such as swimming and sand castle building. There are also Hawaiian games and storytelling which are sure to delight your kids.

At the Hanalei Colony Resort, every condo is supplied with puzzles, games and toys to entertain the kids on your family vacation travel to Kauai. The resort also offers a full schedule of family friendly activities and a Kid’s Camp (Keiki Kamp) periodically throughout the week. These provide fun activities for kids including Hawaiian arts and crafts, nature walks and games. The resort even gives parents a little time to themselves in the evening with their weekly movie and pizza night for kids!

At The Point at Po’ipu, kids can enjoy lei making classes, ukulele lessons and other arts and crafts activities for kids. Of course, all of these children’s activities programs will require you to make arrangements in advance for your children to attend, so don’t forget to take care of this before you leave on your family vacation travel. Your child can have fun while learning a lot about this tropical state and maybe even pick up a knack for the ukulele or surfing – and they’ll definitely come home having learned something about Hawaiian culture. Kauai is a great choice for your next family vacation.

Family Vacation Travel Now?

Feb-28-2009 By skitaddle

Especially now!  There are great family vacation travel deals to be had right now.  Unprecedented.  If you have the time off and the extra money to spend now is the best time to be grabbing great family vacation travel deals!

The television is screaming doom and gloom, on the flip side, have you ever needed a vacation more?  It is imperative to get away as a family and reconnect.  Especially during these trying times of uncertainty.  Your kids feel it too.  Having a getaway now could give you the neccessary time as a family to blow off some steam and remember that it is the moments in our lives not the minutes.

Here’s how to grab yourselves a deal:

1.  Look for last minute getaways that appeal to you.  Instead of having one choice be open and book with your budget instead of your dreams necessarily.  Let’s face it, you could go to your local bed and breakfast and it would sure do your nerves some good.  But I am suggesting just be open and book with somewhere that appeals and fits the budget.

2.  Take the time to call a few different hotels or resorts in the area you have found a great deal to get to.  Do not speak with reservations on the toll free line.  Call the manager on site.  Explain you are coming to the area and were considering your options.  What can he offer you.  Not only will you probably get a better rate but will probably get a few extras thrown in.  Even one or the other saved you some money!  In Vegas, we had a room upgrade and a buffet thrown in, the buffet alone saved us $54.00!

3.  Decide in order to make the trip work, you will cut back on excursions and just be together as a family.  Forget the souveniers and t-shirts, spend some time walking the beach.  You don’t ever remember the souveniers you brought back but you do remember the memories of your trip so focus on that.

4.  Go with extended family and split the price of a house.  It will save you a ton on meals if you eat breakfast, lunch and snack at home.  BBQ at the house/villa at night and have your meal out at lunch, it is a cheaper meal.  (Ask around, locals know the bargain places to eat and it won’t be at the resort.)

5.  If you can’t afford to hop a plane, road trip, even one city away.  You will still de-stress and be glad you did.

There is no better time for your family vacation travel adventure
